We’re three versions of macOS in now from Catalina. Anywhere it says a font manager can disable the Supplemental fonts is true for Monterey or earlier, but not for Ventura, and very likely any OS to come after it.Ĭutting everything off at Big Sur also allowed me to eliminate full sections that were completely obsolete for that OS and later. The main can/can’t issue now is the font manager reviews in section 12. But at least it’s still much less of a mess. Now we’re back to a can/can’t issue anyway. Or, at least I thought it would until discovering Ventura blocks you from disabling fonts in the Supplemental folder. That eliminated virtually all of the can/can’t situations. My goal then was to use Big Sur as the new starting point as it’s the first OS version where the user could no longer remove any fonts installed by the OS. For example, here is the file specification for the Terminal application: I can’t tell you exactly what the path to your home account looks like (since I don’t know your short user name), so here are some handy notes of reference.Ī file specification is the entire path from the root of the volume it resides on to the end of the file name. In 2016, for example, hackers used GRE to attack the website for the Rio Olympics. With a little bit of tinkering, they can set up distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that crash your servers and take you offline. The GRE protocol allows one device to talk to another, bypassing open filtering systems. GRE encapsulation attacks: definition and defense Your clean, repackaged packets could be blown apart before they're delivered. ![]() But you will add two headers, and that could mean you violate MTU rules. Move through the GRE encapsulation process, and you won't change the size of your payload. A maximum segment size (MSS) measures payload size. Sometimes, implementing a GRE tunnel means running afoul of some of these protocols.įor example, a maximum transmission unit (MTU) is set at the device level, and it dictates how big a packet can be. Packet rules are plentiful and widespread. GRE protocols in computing work much the same way (with a lot more coding, of course). You just wrap your package in another system for the journey. Doing so doesn't mean changing your package or your bike. Unfortunately, no bridge exists, and your bike can't ride across the water. You have a package tied to the back of your bicycle that you need to get to the post office across the river. Let’s give a simplistic example to describe how this works. You'll wrap your messages in the proper code and experience no delays. In essence, you'll trick your incompatible devices into believing that they can get along nicely and communicate like old friends. If you know the IP address of your target server, you could reconfigure your router and send your messages along, even if you never buy one new thing to smooth the process. Typically, solving that means buying new equipment. For example, Google Nest users dealing with low batteries or power issues may be dealing with an incompatibility issue. Many of us deal with incompatible devices. Developers can look over this very technical document and understand just how to set up new headers and configure messages to move through without disruption. GRE standards were set up by the Network Working Group back in 2000. You'll need that same data for the node you want to connect to. This isn't the same as a human-friendly web address (like An IP address is made up of numbers and decimals. But you'll need two pieces of information to get started. In most cases, you'll set up a GRE tunnel by tapping into your router setup. Even if the packet must zoom past other nodes, it's never inspected or held up along the way. Think of this as a form of direct, protected communication between two nodes. With encapsulation complete, GRE tunneling can begin.
By systematically sifting news in these categories we aim to ensure that readers miss nothing important. Our news priorities are reflected in the sections that we include in the paper every week: these are both geographical (Britain, Europe, the United States, the Americas, China, Asia, Middle East and Africa, International) and thematic (Business, Finance and economics, Science and technology, Books and arts). ![]() So each week in print and each day online we provide a carefully selected global mix of stories. Our readers expect us to keep them well informed about the world. This mission continues to guide our coverage: we publish it every week in the newspaper. The Economist has been published since September 1843 to take part “in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress”. It now incorporates a font from The Economist Typefamily, a typeface created specifically for our use. The corporate logotype of The Economist has evolved from the gothic lettering used on the cover of the first issue, published in 1843, to the box device designed in 1959 by Reynolds Stone, a British engraver and typographer. Commissioned by The Economist and designed by Alison and Peter Smithson, the tower was our home from 1964 until the summer of 2017, when we moved into the Adelphi, a 1930s art-deco office block on the Embankment. The modern, global version of The Economist was created in “the tower”, as journalists refer to the tallest of the three brutalist concrete buildings that make up the Smithson Plaza (formerly The Economist Plaza) in St James’s Street. The result is a position that is neither right nor left but a blend of the two, drawing on the classical liberalism of the 19th century and coming from what we like to call the radical centre. When The Economist opines on new ideas and policies, it does so on the basis of their merits, not of who supports or opposes them. The Economist’s starting-point is that government should remove power and wealth from individuals only when it has an excellent reason to do so. |
